An enigmatic poetic story that only begins to peel the surface of death’s mysteries. This story revolves around a detached, reserved mortician and her journey into discovering some of death’s secrets. The pressure of a divorce looms over her head, prompting her to focus on her job even as others find it difficult. On an otherwise normal day, she’s called to a scene where a gruesome discovery sets off a chain reaction of terrifying events. She is confronted with the disturbing realization that not only does the Grim Reaper exist, but there is more to death than just passing on. Besides the emotional burden of dealing with the Grim Reaper, she realizes that death isn’t the most frightening part; she soon discovers other, more chilling entities beyond. Her journey into the intricate and incomprehensible mystery beyond the veil explores her past, present, and future.

Moonshelf story: No. This isn’t a story I’d likely read if I wanted something cozy and relaxing but it is great for anyone who enjoys stories with a touch of philosophical and existential elements. This thoughtful story might trigger some reflections or questions about what we know and don’t know about death. What’s beyond? Do we have souls? Is there a ‘veil’? Are there creatures beyond the veil? It personifies death through the Grim Reaper and offers the reader some entertaining dialogue while maintaining a sense of mystery. The plot is slower-paced but has various chapters that provide additional context, adding to the story’s reflective component. It has meaningful scenes throughout the book that take the reader on an intriguing journey into the dark. I enjoyed the main character’s complexity; the author made her seem like a real person you’d know in your own life.

This story would be a great companion for a long road trip or perhaps a camping trip where you have time to contemplate the emerging themes. It is a book for people who like to dig deeper into stories and don’t mind straying a bit from the main plot to learn more about its characters. The story leaves room for spin-offs or additional companion pieces since it only scratches the surface of life beyond death. If you’re a fan of first-person point of view stories, you’ll like this one!

Final notes: This book is for readers who like thorough reflective stories with a little thrill and fright. You’ll enjoy this book if you like paranormal fiction and interesting themes.
